NUTLEY, NJ — Two separate cases of fraud were recently reported in Nutley involving Bitcoin, PayPal and a “sweetheart scam,” police say.
The Nutley Police Department released the following details about each incident, which were both reported on July 26.

BITCOIN/PAYPAL SCAM – “Headquarters received a report of fraud. The victim stated that after finding an invoice for a large amount of Bitcoin purchased through their PayPal account, they made multiple attempts to contact someone to report the incident. When contact was made with ‘David’ they were advised that the fraudulent activity would be removed, but David stated he found other fraudulent activity within the account. David requested the victim to purchase gift cards and provide the numbers to him. The victim spent between $1,700 and $1,900 on the cards and provided the numbers to David as requested. It is also believed that the actor now has access to their personal and banking information. The victim has reported the incident to their bank and requested entry into the Identity Theft Victim database, which was completed. The Nutley Detective Bureau is investigating.”
SWEETHEART SCAM – “Police are investigating a fraud in which Nutley woman was defrauded of thousands of dollars. The woman reported to speaking with a man via social media over the past 11 months, who she believed lived in Queens, NY. He befriended her and requested that she lend him money, and said he would pay her back. Over the course of 11 months, she realized she was being defrauded and reported incident to police. It appears she sent him tens of thousands of dollars.”
